Massachusetts Whitewater Rafting FAQs

Commonly Asked Questions

What is the best time to raft?

SPRING because of higher water, bigger rapids and LOWER PRICES. Spring also brings a beautiful array of color and blooms.
SUMMER because water levels are guaranteed on our DAM CONTROLLED RIVERS and the water warms to 70 degrees and higher.
FALL because the water is still comfortable, the crowds are gone and the foliage is spectacular!
In other words, there is no "best" time to raft. All three seasons offer special features.

  Can I request my guide?

Please do! Our guides look forward to taking their favorite crews down the river again and again. But please remember that your favorite Crab Apple guide may already be requested or have other commitments preventing us from making any guarantees

Do trips run in the rain?

Raft trips will not be cancelled due to weather unless Crab Apple deems that travel to the river from base camps or safety on the river will be compromised. Cancellations would be decided the morning of a trip at Crab Apple and full refunds issued.

Deerfield River - Fife Brook Section Rafting

Fun, Easy Whitewater!

This beautiful ten mile trip through mild whitewater is the perfect outing for families, friends, groups and youth organizations. Daily dam control ensures we start out with a bang at “Hurricane Rapid” followed by easy rapids such as “Sideways Splash”, "Freight Train" and "Pinball". Calm sections allow your guide to fill you in on local history and to enjoy the breathtaking scenery of the Berkshires. Midway through the trip our self-bailing rafts approach the day's biggest rapid, "Zoar Gap”.  After safely navigating this exciting Class III stretch, the second half of the trip includes fun rapids such as “Slam Dance” and “Cold River Rapid” as well as opportunities to get out of the boat and float or engage in team water fights.

My wife and I visited your Massachusetts facility and went on the Deerfield River Fife Brook section trip.

“Owning my own business, I know you must often hear complaints long before compliments which prompted me to write. My wife and I were concerned about white water rafting with our kids because we have an autistic son and didn’t know how he would respond to rafting. Our guide that day was Tom. Tom was able to make our son…feel comfortable and seemed to connect with him in a way we don’t often see people connect to him. Robbie had a wonderful day and even days later mentions his friend Tom. My daughter was nervous as well and was put at ease by Tom. Overall, our family had a great day due to how well Tom did and how well he connected to our children.”

We went rafting on the Deerfield yesterday.

“Frank, who gave all the pre-trip directions, was great! We were very impressed from the start! Our guide, Al, was a blast! We had all adults in our boat so we had a ton of fun! Al made our trip very enjoyable!”

Our California side of the family just left...

“And your trip was the highlight of their stay; and the first thing they mention when talking about what they did in Massachusetts! We have never been on a more smoothly run adventure! The excellent lunch and delicious homemade brownies were frosting on the cake! The boys are already researching your “more challenging” trips for next year…we will gladly spread the word of your family service and company to all we meet.”

This was our first time ever river rafting.

“Jen, our guide, was so fun and enthusiastic. She made it fun for both the kids and adults. We were also impressed with her attention to safety. In fact, every one of the guides was very professional and friendly... Our pictures from Zoar Gap are already up on the wall!”
